George was the youngest of twelve children born to Johan "Peter" and Anna Barbara (Fuhrin) Sommers.
Seven of George's siblings died at very young ages.
George immigrated to America with his parents in 1829, residing in Pennsylvania.

George later moved to Whiteside County, Illinois, where he met and married Catherine Wirth August 11, 1851.
After the birth of their first son, they moved to Loraine County, Illinois, where they would have eight more children and live the remainder of their lives.
