Confederate Congressman. He was elected, during the American Civil War, to represent Arkansas in the Confederate Congress from 1861 to 1865. Earlier, he served as a Member of the Arkansas State House of Representatives, Member of the Arkansas State Senate, and State Court Judge. An Arkansas lawyer and politician, he attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky to study law and graduated in 1834. After the war, he continue his law practice.
