U.S. Congressman. Moving to Arkansas, with his parents in 1885, he went to Kent College of Law Chicago, was admitted to the bar in 1898 and commenced to practice law in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He was city clerk of Eureka Springs, (1898-1902), a member of the Arkansas State House of Representatives, (1903-05), Mayor of Eureka Springs, (1906-10, 20-28), prosecuting attorney of the fourth Arkansas judicial district, (1910-14) and president of the Eureka Springs School Board, (1916-28). In 1929, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-first Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1939. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and was president of the Bank of Eureka Springs, until his death at age 91.
