James M. Abney, a resident of Wyoming for sixty-four years and of Converse County for forty years, died at his home on little Boxelder Monday afternoon after a brief illnes. He was 70 years of age.
Mr. Abney was a native of Missouri, having been born at Savannah in that state on January 20, 1860. The family later moved to Nebraska and his father, Jackson Abney, in 1864, became a contractor in the building of the Union Pacific Railroad. It was in 1866 that James Abney came with his parents to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Jackson Abney located at Cheyenne and entered the livestock business with his brother, J. C. Abney. Their ranch holdings were in the vicinity of Pine Bluffs and at one time Jackson Abney was offered $150,000.00 for his interest.
James Abney early in life became identified with the cattle business. He was only about 12 years of age when he began as a rider on the range and his whole life was spent in the cattle and ranch business. In the eighties he came to central Wyoming, which had been his home until his death.
On November 19, 1886 he was married in Douglas to Frances Margaret Gill, this being the first marriage celebrated in what is now Converse County (then a part of Albany County). Mrs. Abney died July 20, 1927. On October 20, 1929 he was married at Harrison, Nebraska to Mrs. Opal Entaminger, who survives him.
No children were born to Mr. Abney, but a niece of the first Mrs. Abney, Mrs. Percy Brockway, was adopted and raised by them. A sister, Mrs. Florence Small, lives in New Mexico.
