Mr. Abney was a native of Missouri, having been born at Savannah in that state on January 20, 1860. The family later moved to Nebraska and his father, Jackson Abney, in 1864, became a contractor in the building of the Union Pacific Railroad. It was in 1866 that James Abney came with his parents to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Jackson Abney located at Cheyenne and entered the livestock business with his brother, J. C. Abney. Mrs. Abney died July 20, 1927. On October 20, 1929 he was married at Harrison, Nebraska to Mrs. Opal Entaminger, who survives him.

No children were born to Mr. Abney, but a niece of the first Mrs. Abney, Mrs. Percy Brockway, was adopted and raised by them. A sister, Mrs. Florence Small, lives in New Mexico.

Information was obtained from his obituary in the Douglas Budget, June 12, 1930 and cemetery records.
