US Congressman. Born in Batesville, Arkansas, with the start of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army as a Private in 1861 and went one to be Colonel in command of the 4th Regiment, Arkansas Infantry. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Bentonville, Arkansas. He was prosecuting attorney of the fourth judicial circuit of Arkansas, (1873-76) and elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving (1883-93). An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and died at age 93 in Bentonville, Arkansas.
