Reginald "Reggie" Abbott, 83, of East Hartford, loving husband of Barbara S. (Blood) Abbott for over 58 years, passed away peacefully on Thursday (June 9, 2011).

Born on May 6, 1928 in Bonavista, Newfoundland, Canada, a son of the late Hezekiah and Greta Jane (Hampton) Abbott, he had been a resident of East Hartford for many years.

He was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Army who served during WWII.

He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1953 with a BS degree in Geophysics and received a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University in New York and earned a second Masters Degree in Mathematics from Central Connecticut State University.

Prior to his retirement in 1989, Reggie was employed by the State of Connecticut for 40 years. He spent 10 years with the Highway Department followed by nearly 30 years as an Associate Professor at Hartford State Technical College, Hartford.

He was a faithful member for 54 years at South Congregational Church in East Hartford where he was active in several of their ministries. He was a member and Past Master of the former Orient Lodge #62 AF and AM in East Hartford and was an active 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner in several capacities at several area lodges. He was also a member of the King's Daughters & Sons Friendship Circle.

Reggie was an avid reader who loved Bible studies and furthering his education, along with being a follower of holistic approaches, he loved a good game of chess and enjoyed listening to classical music.

Along with his wife Barbara, Reggie is survived by his children: son, David G. Abbott and his wife, Lisa of East Hartford; three daughters, Jeannette Ann Abbott and her husband, Paul Williams of Tolland, Deborah J. Bostock and her husband, George of North Port, FL, and Kathleen M. Abbott and her husband, Gian Luigi Piotto of Glastonbury; two brothers, Gordon Abbott and his wife, Joyce of Westford, MA, and Edward Rice and his wife, Diane of Cambridge, MA; seven special grandchildren; one adored great-granddaughter; several nieces, nephews and many dear friends. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a son, Robert Reginald Abbott of East Hartford and a sister, Edith Abbott.

Funeral services will be Tuesday (June 14th) at 10 a.m. at South Congregational Church, East Hartford with Rev. Al Turner officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Veterans Memorial Field-Silver Lane Cemetery, East Hartford. Relatives and friends may call at the D'Esopo-East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford on Monday (June 13th) from 4-7 p.m. A Masonic Service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m Monday evening at the funeral home chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the South Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 1301 Forbes Street, East Hartford, CT 06118. Reginald's family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the entire staffs at Salmon Brook Health Care Center, Glastonbury and the Masonicare Partners Home Health & Hospice, East Hartford for their professionalism, care, love, and compassion they gave to Reggie and his entire family.
