Gerald Joseph Serrano
April 16, 1929 ~ January 18, 2010

MONTEREY - The family of Gerald Joseph Serrano wishes to inform family and friends that he passed away with a smile on his face on January 18. He and his wife, Nina, owned and operated Birks Monterey Key Shop for over 50 years. Nina preceded him in death on April 3,2008.

Gerald, also known as Jerry, was a fifth generation native of the Monterey Peninsula. He was born to Teresa Boronda (whose family dates back to the 1700's) and Joaquin Serrano (whose family dates back to the 1800's). His pioneer ancestors were instrumental in establishing and
building the Monterey Peninsula and surrounding areas. Jerry served in the National Guard for three years.

Jerry is survived by his children, Susan (David) Dunham, Terry (Joyce) Serrano, Gary Serrano and Lori Serrano and his grandsons, Gerald MacDonald, Scott (Eloisa) MacDonald-Serrano and Joseph (Laura) Serrano. He also leaves
five great-grandchildren: Shayna, Ryan, Madison, Tyler and Keighon. He was preceded in death by his siblings,Bernice, Bill and David.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Mary Roberts at the VA Clinic at Fort Ord for being his doctor. He just adored her. We also thank Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital for his final days of care and also Deacon Rick Gutierrez for final rites.

Memorial services will be held at St. Angela Merci Catholic Church in Pacific Grove on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. An old-fashioned picnic celebrating the lives of Jerry and Nina will follow in St. Angela's Parish Hall. Please bring a funny story to share. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a memorial donation be made to Monterey Peninsula Volunteer Services, P.O. Box 95, Seaside, CA 93955.
