US Congressman. Born in Searcy, Arkansas, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1879 and commenced to practice in Newport, Arkansas. He was prosecuting attorney of the First Judicial District of Arkansas, (1886-90) and a member of the Democratic State central committee, (1890-92). In 1897, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1909. Not a candidate for renomination, he resumed the practice of law in Searcy, Arkansas, until his death at age 81.
