US Senator. She graduated from Dickson Normal College Tennessee, in 1896, then relocated in Jonesboro, Arkansas. In 1931, she was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of her husband, Thaddeus H. Caraway. Reelected in 1932, she was the first woman elected to the United States Senate serving until 1945. An unsuccessful candidate for renomination, she was a member of the United States Employees’ Compensation Commission (1945-46) and a member of the Employees’ Compensation Appeals Board from July 1946, until her death at age 72.
