William Joseph Sanford, 83, of N. 5th Street transitioned into eternal life on Wednesday, June 08, 2011 in Harrisburg Hospital.

He was born in Milledgeville, Georgia, the son of the late William and Wilhelmina (Hicks) Sanford.

William was a graduate of the former Harrisburg Catholic High School where he excelled in football and basketball.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.

William was a former employee of the former Mechanicsburg Naval Depot and retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Education.

He was a member of The Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

William was a member of American Legion Ephraim Slaughter Post #733.

"Ham or Buddy" as he was affectionately known, played semi-pro football on the former Harrisburg Trojans Football Team and played on the Senior Basketball Team at the former Forster Street Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA).

Because of his love of sports, William became a volunteer at the YMCA on 6th Street in Harrisburg for many years. He helped guide and shape the lives of young men until his health prevented him, but he remained an avid sports fan to the end.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son: William J. Sanford, Jr.; and, his grandson: Carl L. Brown, Jr.

Ham is survived by his wife of sixty-three years: Ruth M. Sanford; his daughters: Vivian L. Brown, Mary E. (Willie) Tomlinson, Theresa L. Holland, and Thalia R. McClenton; his son: Edward L. (Delphene) Sanford; his twenty-three grandchildren; his twenty-five great-grandchildren; his eleven great-great-grandchildren; his special daughter-in-law: Patricia (Reginald) Warden; his uncle: Marlin (Myrtle) Hicks; his other relatives; and, his friends.

A Viewing will be held from 10:00 - 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 in the Sanctuary of The Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 212 N. Progress Avenue, Harrisburg. Life Celebration will begin at 11:00 AM.

Interment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
