'Amanda Deisroth Died Yesterday'
'One of Hazleton's Oldest Residents Passed Away in Her Ninety-First Year.'
Mrs. Amanda Deisroth, who last Tuesday celebrated her 91st birthday, died suddenly shortly after Saturday midnight, at her home, at 61 North Church street, this city. She had been in apparent good health. Mrs. Deisroth was the daughter of the late Henry Yost and Phoebe Turnbach Yost, and was born in Sugarloaf on February 14th, 1848. A life-long resident of this region, Mrs. Deisroth came to Hazleton as the bide of the late Peter Deisroth, founder of the Deisroth Department Store, who died in April of 1900.
Mrs. Deisroth was a charter member of the Trinity Lutheran church in this city, and has been active in the work of the church and its societies since its organization. In July of 1936, when the church celebrated its silver anniversary, special tribute was paid to Mrs. Deisroth as the only surviving charter member. Throughout her life in this city, Mrs. Deisroth has been highly esteemed and has been identified with a number of activities. A large number of birthday greetings arrived for her last week, and last evening, her countless friends expressed their deep regret at the passing of one of Hazleton's greatest examples of womanhood and motherhood.
Will Deisroth, a son of Mrs. Amanda Deisroth, died six years ago this month; and Arthur, another son, died in 1914. A daughter, Carrie Anna, died in her infancy. Surviving are two children, Mrs. C. J. Kirschner, of this city, and A. Y. Deisroth, a member of the Deisroth Store firm. A sister, Mrs. John Miller, of Seybertsville, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren, also survive.
The funeral will be private, and will be held from the home on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with services in charge of Rev. H. Clay Bergstresser, pastor of the Trinity Lutheran church. Friends may call at the home on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 o'clock.
