U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Harvard University in 1822, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1825 and commenced to practice law in Dunstable, New Hampshire. He was a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, (1830, 33-35). In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth and the next two succeeding Congresses, serving until 1843. Not seeking reelection, he was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat, serving (1843-49). He was again elected to the United States Senate in 1852 and served until his death at age 49.
