Welcomed into the world in 1880, Mary was the second to last of the Spiegel's children. Raised mostly in a house in Batesville, Mary followed in her sibling's footsteps and attended school at St. Louis, but only through the 6th grade unlike her sisters Rose and Katie who completed the 8th grade. After she finished school, she remained helping at home until she married Frank Erne in 1901, a mere two weeks before her brother, Gregor, married. Like herself, Frank was a first generation American.

Frank and Mary became the parents of four children: Joe, Herman, Pate and Rose. They eventually purchased a home at 307 Western Avenue which is near Liberty Park.

Mary and Frank were only married ten years when he died, leaving her with four young children to raise. The Erne children remained living with Mary until they married. Mary and her eldest son Joe, who was single, remained in the house on Western Avenue until her death in 1964 at the age of 84. She is buried with her parents, some of her siblings, husband and son in the Spiegel family plot at St. Louis Cemetery.
