James Lindbergh "Lindy" Newton, of White Oak, died Saturday, June 11, 2011 at his residence.

Mr. Newton was a native of Stafford and the son to the late, James and Grace Pocahantas Newton. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he married Barbara Jean Layton in 1949. He worked as a commercial fisherman. Mr. Newton then worked at Quantico for 33 years and retiring as maintenance general foreman in 1982. He also owned and operated Newts Electric Motor and Pump Repair. He was a member of Patawomeck Indian Tribe and New Hope United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean Layton Newton in 1997; and two sons, James Everett Newton and Bruce Wayne Newton.

Survivors include three daughters, Carol Newton Petitt and her companion Dan Cherven, of Spotsylvania, JoAnn Meredith and her husband, Jim, of Partlow, and Jennifer N. Gallahan and her husband, Tony, of White Oak; ten grandchildren, Jason Wayne Newton, Timothy Edwards Skinner, Andrea Clayton, Joni Marie Gallahan, Lesley Buchanan, James E. Newton II, Matthew Ross Gallahan, Mandy Meredith, Alexis Meredith, and Staci Meredith; 11 great grandchildren; two sisters, Velma N. Hicks and her husband, Jack, and June N. Eackles; a brother-in-law, Terry Layton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service will be held at noon Tuesday, June 14, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel with the Rev. Ernest Babel officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery with military honors.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 13 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to White Oak Fire Department, 12 Newton Road, Falmouth, Virginia, 22405; White Oak Rescue Squad, 535 White Oak Road, Falmouth, Virginia 22405, or Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, Virginia 22407.
