U.S. Congressman. He attended Kemper College, studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Cole County, Missouri. He was deputy clerk of Cole County, Assistant Adjutant General of Missouri and moved to California in 1850. There he was clerk of Trinity County, appointed District Attorney in 1853, a member of the California State Assembly in 1856 and served in the California State Senate, (1857-59). In 1858, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving until 1861. After his term, he was California code commissioner, (1861-65) and resumed the practice of law until his death at age 59.
