US Congressman. He graduated from Southern University, in 1886, from the University of Virginia Law School, in 1889, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Eufaula, Alabama. He was a delegate to the Alabama State constitutional convention in 1901, prosecuting attorney for Montgomery County, and a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1908. In 1909, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-first Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1921. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and was president of the Alabama State constitutional convention for repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment in 1933.
