U.S. Congressman. He immigrated to the United States in 1854 and engaged as a calico printer in Fort Wayne, Indiana. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain of Company I, 30th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers, Union Army and was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh. After the war, he was a department store owner, manufactured wheels and a member of the common council of Fort Wayne in 1874. In 1887, he was elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth Congress, serving until 1889. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1892 and commissioner to the World's Columbian Exposition at Chicago, Illinois, in 1893.
