Anna Maria Graedel Anliker

Maria immigrated to IL in the summer of 1891 with her husband, Johannas and nine of their 13 children. The couple purchased land from the widow of Michael Sullivant near Sibley in Ford Co. They farmed there until they retired.

The children scattered to various parts of the U. S. The last years of her life, widow Maria lived with son Hans and his wife Teba von Brethorst Anliker in the farmhouse in Sullivant Township. In Dec. 1908 a fire destroyed the farmhouse and Teba had to make three attempts to rescue grandma Maria, who lived upstairs. She succeeded and Maria lived another year.

Tombstone date is 1090. However, Gibson City Courier dated December 18, 1908. The following is the obituary:

Death of Mrs. Anliker.

Died, at the home of Mrs. Andrew Lanz, Friday night, December 4, Mrs. Maria Anliker, aged 75 years, 2 months and 28 days. The funeral services were held at the German Lutheran church at this place Monday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Spalding officiating. The body was laid to rest in Mount Hope cemetery.

Mrs. Anliker was born in Switzerland in 1833; came to America with her husband and family in 1891. The same year the family bought the old Sullivant homestead two miles northeast of Sibley.

Her husband died September 19, 1900. The widow stayed with her son Fritz until 1903, when there family sold their farm to the Blum brothers and moved to Iowa. Mrs. Anliker returned to Sibley in 1904 and has since resided with her daughter Mrs. Andrew Lanz and son Hans Anliker.

Two years ago she was stricken with lung fever from which she had never wholly recovered. The house in which Hans Anliker and his mother resided took fire December 2nd and by the heroic efforts of Mrs. Hans Anliker the aged mother was rescued from the burning building, but owing to exposure caught a severe cold which resulted in her death.

Deceased was the mother of thirteen children, nine of which are living, and five of whom were present at the funeral - John Anliker, of Triplett, Mo.; Mrs. John Hausler, and son Alfred of Fairbanks, Iowa; Miss Ann Anliker and niece, Miss Emily Hugli, of Hanna, Ind., and Mrs. Andrew Lanz and Hans Anliker of this place. The children who were not present were Fritz Anliker of Frederick, S. Dak.; Mrs. Mary Zingg of Mercer county, Ill.; Mrs. Louse Young and Mrs. Emily Hugli of Hanna, Ind. Mr. Fred Aellig, of Peoria, a friend of the family was also present at the funeral.

Mrs. Anliker was a motherly woman, beloved by all who knew her; a lifelong member of the Lutheran church, conscientious in motive and guided ever by a Christian spirit. She has gone to reap the harvest of an arduous life and the plaudits of the populace in that world beyond.
