Arvin O. Basnight, native to Dare County and son of the late Tom and "Mary Tom" Basnight, died Friday morning at his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California.

He had resided with his wife Marjorie of nearly 60 years in California after a distinguished career in aviation and including a period with CAA, forerunner of the FAA, serving at various positions, including director of the western regions.

Funeral services were incomplete at press time, although burial is to be in California, probably on Tuesday.

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, CALIFORNIA - Arvin O. Basnight, elder son of the late Capt. Tom and "Mary Tom" Meekins Basnight, died Friday, January 14 after a battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held at Green Hills Mortuary, Rancho Palos Verdes on Tuesday, January 18 at 3 p.m.

He was born September 14, 1915 in Manteo.

In his youth he was an actor in the "Lost Colony" pageant and a guide at the Wright memorial. He had the privilege of escorting Orville Wright on his first visit to the memorial. Though he was removed from his home estate, he never lost his love for the Outer Banks and its people.

His education included attendance at North Carolina State College, American University, and George Washington University.

He served in the Army Air Corps in WWII as a B-17 pilot in Europe, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. His career included 40 years of government service with the Federal Aviation Administration. He also served as the director of the Federal Executive Board.

He concluded his career as director of the Western Region of the FAA, retiring in 1974.

After retiring, Arvin was active in numerous Southern California organizations including serving as president and director for the Aero Club of Southern California, development of the Wright Flyer project, member and past President of the Palos Verses Breakfast Club, member of the Palos Verdes Tennis Club, director of the Palos Verdes National Bank, member of the Red Barons and the Assembly.

He is survived by Marjorie, his wife of 58 years; three children: Mary Ann Basnight Wolf of San Diego, Captain William Basnight of Houston, and Dr. Michael Basnight of Venice, Florida. He has 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
