Ellis Gibbs Arnall

Georgia Governor. He graduated from the University of the South in 1928, with a law degree from the University of Georgia in 1931 and was a legal advisor.. Entering politics, he was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives, (1932-38) and was Georgia Attorney General, (1939-43). In 1943, he was elected as a Democrat the 69th Governor of Georgia, serving until 1947. During his term, accreditation was reinstated to the university system, reforms in the state's prison system were sanctioned, the voting age was changed to eighteen, a new state constitution was endorsed, plus a state employees merit system and a teachers' retirement system, was established. After leaving office, he was an attorney and founded Arnall Golden & Greg, which went on to be one of leading law firms in Atlanta, Georgia.
