U.S. Senator. He graduated from the University of Georgia, in 1959, from the law department of the University of Georgia, in 1860, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Athens, Georgia. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army and after the war, resumed the practice of law. He was member of the Georgia State constitutional convention in 1877 and a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1880-81). In 1882, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1882 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Benjamin H. Hill, serving until 1883. Not a candidate for re-election, he resumed the practice of law and was a judge of the eastern judicial circuit of Georgia, from 1902, until his death at age 64.
