Albert was born to Lewis J. and Julia A. Salren Hoffer.

The 1900 federal census shows they lived in a rented house at 740 Zane St. in Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio. The family included father, Lewis J., mother Julia A., 6 yr old Marie C., Laurena O. at 4 yrs and Albert L. who was 2 yrs. Lewis and Julia were married in about 1893. Lewis worked as a bartender.

The 1910 census had the family residing in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio at 974 1/2 High St. Lewis was still employed as a bartender and Marie was a store clerk.

Per military info, Albert enlisted in the Ohio National Guard on July 23, 1917 at the age of 19 yrs and 9 mos. "Co E 7 Infantry ONG to --; Co D 148 Machine Gun Battalion to --; Co M 148 Infantry to Discharge Private, first class --/17; Corporal 15 Nov 1918. Meuse-Argonne; Ypres-Lys; Defensive Sector. American Expeditionary Forces 29 June 1918 to 28 March 1919. Honorable discharge 21 Apr 1919."

By 1920, they were back in Zanesville in a home that was owned free of a mortgage. Lewis was working as a laborer, Julia was employed at a glass house, Marie was a department store cashier and Albert was a laborer at a tile works.

Albert married Elizabeth S. Murgatroyd in about 1920.

Per the 1930 federal census, Albert and Elizabeth lived with their daughter, Mary Louise (3 yr 11 mos) at 868 Woodlawn Ave. in Zanesville, OH. They rented for $14 per month. Albert worked as a laborer at a tile plant. Also in the home was Elizabeth's 21 year old brother, John. John worked at a filling station.

Another daughter, Elizabeth Jean was born in August 1931.
