Mrs. Hinkle was born on October 31, 1908 in Scranton, PA and was the daughter of the late Emrys Sibbering Joseph and Mary Davis Joseph. She moved to Harrisburg, PA at a young age. She was a 1927 graduate from The Grier School in Tyrone, PA and a 1928 graduate from The Katherine Gibbs School in Boston, MA. Mrs. Hinkle worked for her father in Harrisburg in the insurance supply business. In 1935 she married Samuel Forry Hinkle who was a chemist in the laboratory of the Hershey Chocolate Corporation. Peggy and Sam lived in Hershey for 50 years, and Sam ultimately became the president and chairman of the Board of the Hershey Chocolate Corporation. After Sam's death in 1983, Peggy moved to Florida for 16 years before finally moving to Atlanta, GA in 2001.
In addition to her parents and husband, Peggy was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Abe Troup of Camp Hill, PA. She is survived by her sons, Samuel Hinkle, Jr. (Elaine) of Naples, FL, Dr. James Hinkle (Sally) of Atlanta, GA; 6 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
There will be a family prayer service and celebration of Peggy's life on November 13, 2010 at the home of Jim and Sally Hinkle. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Derry Presbyterian Church in Hershey, PA in early December. Burial of her ashes will be at the Hershey Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to "Penn State University", designated for Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, PO Box 852, Hershey, PA 17033. The family would like to thank Peggy's care givers at Sunrise Assisted Living of Buckhead and at Signature Healthcare of Buckhead. Arrangements by H.M.
