U.S. Senator. He was a country-western singer when he joined a dramatic stock company in 1919 and was a manager of various entertainment enterprises (1926-44). In 1944, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1951. He also was and unsuccessful candidate for Vice President of the United States on the Progressive Party ticket in 1948. After leaving the Senate, he was president of Coryell Construction Company and of Taylor Topper, Incorporated. He later relocated to California and lived in retirement until his death from complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
