Mrs. Martha Peirce Dead

Passes Away Sunday Afternoon
Resident of City Half a Century

Mrs. Martha Emery Pierce, one of Valparaiso's best known and highly respected residents, passed away Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at her home on North Washington street. She had been in failing health for several years.

The deceased was 91 years old and was the widow of the late Jeremiah C. Peirce. She was a daughter of the late Joshua and Jane Emery, of Cannonsberg, Pa., where she was born. She came here in 1856, and shortly afterwards was married to Mr. Peirce, who died some seven years ago.

She leaves three nephews, William Emery Brown, of South Bend, formerly auditor of Porter county; James B., and Sloan Emery, of Memphis, Tenn., and a niece, Mrs. Mary Jeannette Dyer, and granddaughter, Miss Stella Dyer, who resides at Eger, Austria. Mrs. Perice's husband was a brother of the late Mrs. J. H. Letherman. Mrs. Dr. Herriott, Mrs. Judge Anthony and Mrs. Rev. J. C. Brown, all of whom have passed away, were sisters of Mrs. Peirce.

The funeral will be held from her late home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. M. Gelston, pastor of the Presbyterian church, of which organization she was a member. The interment will be at Maplewood.
