Jeremiah, the son of Andrew and Rebecca (McKibbin) Peirce, spent his childhood in Newville and, later, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1850, he was living with his parents and siblings on a farm in Iowa.

A few years later, the family moved to Valparaiso, Indiana. Jeremiah was married twice. His first wife, Virginia Haas, was the sister of Julia Haas, his eldest brother's (Joseph's) wife. Virginia must have died young, as in 1856 Jerry was married to his second wife, Martha Emery. The couple was married for nearly sixty years. They had no children.

Jeremiah was active in the Presbyterian church along with the rest of his family. He served on the first town council, when Valparaiso was incorporated in 1866. Later, in 1880, Jeremiah served as Deputy County Auditor, a position he held until at least 1885.

By the turn of the century, at the age of 79, the census taker listed his occupation as "capitalist" so he must have had it made by then.

Jeremiah died at the age of 84; his wife, Martha, lived on for another five years.

Biography by his 2nd great-grandnephew, David Peirce.

Here is his obituary:
