Dorothy Steed Kammerath Rettig, 93, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, returned to our Heavenly Father on Monday, June 6, 2011 due to causes related to age.

Dorothy was born in Farmington, Utah on April 17, 1918 to Oliver Franklin Steed and Mabel Loranda Lindsay. She was one of fifteen children. She graduated from Davis High School, and married Alvin E. Kammerath on October 19, 1937 in Montpelier, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on June 4, 1944. They had eight children, five sons and three daughters. Alvin passed away on September 10, 1973, and she married Elwood O. (Bud) Rettig in September 1978. He passed away on August 16, 1998. She lived in East Millcreek, Murray, and most recently in South Jordan, Utah.

Dorothy was a longtime employee of J.C. Penney Company, working at three different locations before retiring at age eighty-four. She was a caring gardener, especially when it came to her ever-expanding rose garden.

Dorothy served faithfully in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in many ward callings. She was serving as a temple worker in the Jordan River Temple at the time of her death. She loved to sing, and always enjoyed singing in the ward choir throughout her life.

She is survived by six children; Diane (Don) Anderson, Janice Burkinshaw, Steven (Karen), Craig, Marc (Deon), and Brian; brother, Richard Steed; twenty grandchildren; forty-two great-grandchildren; and twenty-six great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alvin, daughter Susan Shafer, son Merrill, son-in-law Jay Burkinshaw, husband Bud, brothers Dean, Jack, Russell, Frank, Jay, and Don, and sisters Melva, Julia, Lisle, Maxine, Bonnie, Betty, and Norma.

We will always remember her for her devotion to and the sacrifices she made for her family, her faith in the Savior, her unwavering testimony of the Gospel, and her childlike prayers. She was truly an example to all of us of hard work and perseverance.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. in the River Ridge Seventh Ward Chapel, 10190 South 1300 West, South Jordan, Utah.
