Mrs. Permillia Staats, 94, on of Coshocton county's pioneer residents and a member of one of the county's oldest families, died today at 3 a.m. at the home of her daughter.
She was born June 12, 1839 on a farm where the village of Nellie is now located. Her parents, Thomas and Demmie Darling, were among the first settlers in the county, and Mrs. Staats was one of the first white children born in this area.
The Nellie vicinity was a wilderness when she was born, and she witnessed the development of a prosperous community. As a pioneer woman she was compelled to undergo countless hardships, but she was always cheerful and ready to help others.
Mrs. Staats, when a young girl, used a horse and side saddle to travel. At different times, she and other girls would ride to Coshocton to attend the county fair.
She lived to see transportation come and go in Nellie. First came the railroad and later the bus lines, which have both discontinued.
Mrs. Staats was married twice. She married James B Wright in 1859. He died many years ago, and in 1877, she married C C Staats, who died in Nov. 1919.
Surviving are two children by her first marriage, Mrs. William Ringwalt at whose home she died, and French Wright of Warsaw.; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
