William served in the 56th Virginia Militia and on July 16, 1861 enlisted in Company K, 6th Virginia Cavalry. On October 24th, he was posted at the Waterford home of Union supporter Samuel Means and was shot by an unknown assailant, becoming the first member of the Grubb family lost during the Civil War.
