"Raymond C. Carnes, 87, of Coleman, died Monday, June 7, 2010 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 10 at Elm Street Church of Christ, 216 W. Elm with Sam Wilson officiating. In honor of Raymond's service to the Coleman community, his casket will be taken to the Coleman City Cemetery on the 1973 Ford fire truck which was the truck that Raymond drove so often. Members of the Coleman Fire Department will fold and present the United States Flag and Denny Fulbright will play "Taps." Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

"Raymond C. Carnes was born August 31, 1922 in Rockwood, Texas, a son of Jesse Carnes and Belle Crutcher Carnes. He grew up in Coleman and attended school at Cross Cut. During World War II he served in Germany in the United States Air Force. On June 15, 1946 he married Dorothy Johnson in Brownwood. He was a fireman for Coleman Fire Department for 37 years where he was the head driver for many years. At the time of his retirement in 1988, he was serving as the Fire Marshall. Raymond also proudly served as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff and a Police Dispatcher. On his days off at the fire department, he worked as a mechanic for Taylor Motor Company. He was a member of Elm Street Church of Christ.

"Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Carnes of Coleman; one son, Gary Carnes and wife Paula of Carrollton; one daughter, Raylene Watson and husband Jim of Coleman; one grandchild, Jimmy Watson and his fiancee' Christi Leatherman; several nieces and nephews.

"He was preceded in death by an infant son, Tommy Ray Carnes; four brothers, Willie, Vernon, Joe Dean and Donald Carnes and one sister, Dorothy McCarley.

"Family visitation will be held Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan, Coleman. Memorials may be made to the Coleman Fire Department, P. O. Box 592, Coleman, Texas 76834 or the Elm Street Church of Christ, 216 W. Elm, Coleman, Texas 76834."
