According to his Washington State death certificate, John was the son of Thomas Scurry and Martha Layne. He was a civil engineer. His wife was named Nellie.

"PIONEER OF SEATTLE TO BE BURIED TODAY
John G. Scurry, a Veteran of the Civil War, Was Old-Time Resident Here.

John G. Scurry, one of the pioneer residents of the city, who died Wednesday night, at the age of 70, will be buried at 3 o'clock this afternoon from the Bonney-Watson chapel. He was one of the best known civil engineers in the Northwest and a veteran of the civil war. Rev. Maurice J. Bywater will officiate at the services.

Mr. Scurry was graduated from the University of Virginia and Johns Hopkins univerity. After the civil war he assisted in locating the Southern and Union Pacific lines and later laid out the Northern Pacific route through Washington. He was city engineer of Seattle under Mayor Moran and at the time of the big fire of 1889. The last fifteen years of his life were spent mostly in Alaska and in reconnaissance work on the Olympic peninsula. Mrs. Scurry and the following children survive him: Charles T. Scurry, of Aberdeen; Matthew E. Scurry, Mrs. W. W. Council and Mrs. A. Van Vetchen, of Seattle. He made his home with Mrs. Council, at 1635 Forty-fifth southwest."

"SCURRY - At the family residence, 1635 Forty-fifth avenue southwest, July 14, 1915, John G. Scurry, aged 69 years, husband of Mrs. Nellie M. Scurry and father of Matthew E. and Charles Terry Scurry, Mrs. Abraham Van Vechten and Mrs. Dr. W. W. Council.

Funeral services will be held at the parlors of Bonney-Watson Co., Broadway at Olive street, opposite Broadway high school, this (Friday) afternoon at 3 o'clock. Friends are invited to attend. Incineration."
