American Golf Pioneer. Born in Dunfermline, Scotland, he is regarded as the "Father of American Golf". He emigrated to New York, as a young man with balls and clubs he brought from Scotland and the game was started on a cow pasture with three holes. In February 1888, he founded the St. Andrews Golf Club at Yonkers, New York and was the club's first president as well an ardent promoter. Getting the club organized formally, he imported more equipment from Scotland, club membership grew and by the spring of 1889, the club had 12 members. The custom of having a "wee drop" at the 19th hole, may also have been started by Reid, who invited friends in for a drink after a game. The club and course moved several times, but it's main location was at Hastings on the Hudson, from 1897 into the 1980s. He died at age 75 in Yonkers, New York.
