Paula Therese McClune Rainey (Mrs. William Robert Rainey) passed away on June 6, 2011. "Didi" was born August 15, 1922 at Brooke Army Medical Hospital in San Antonio, the only child of Paula Meuser McClune and Harold Hugh McClune.

Her childhood was spent traveling the world with her parents. Her father was a United States career Army officer and her mother, who was born and raised in Germany, often took Didi "home" to visit her family.

Didi was fond of relating stories of their various stations - Plattsburgh Barracks, New York; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Fort Benning, Georgia; the Philippine Islands; and Puerto Rico among them. She frequently recounted travel adventures in Europe and Asia.

Her father's service in the Cavalry encouraged a life long love of horses. She rode, raised, and trained Tennessee Walking horses. She was also an accomplished and enthusiastic tennis player and enjoyed the sport well into her seventh decade, participating in and winning several tournaments.

In 2009 she was an inductee to the San Antonio Country Club's Tennis Honor Roll. Didi was a beautiful person and was named Military Queen of the Cheyenne Rodeo. She graduated from high school in New York and attended the University of Richmond.

She met Captain William (Bill) Rainey in Puerto Rico in 1941 and they were married November 3, 1942 in Miami, Florida. Didi, her mother, and other military wives and children had been evacuated to Miami due to the threat posed by German submarines off the Puerto Rican Coast at the beginning of World War II.

Shortly after they were married, Bill, who was serving in the Army, was deployed to Europe. Didi and her mother moved to San Antonio to await the end of the war and the return of their husbands. When Bill returned to civilian life in 1946, they chose to stay in San Antonio. Together, they raised three daughters: Anna Elaine, Stephanie Marie, and Paula Therese.

She was a devoted wife and mother who, by example, instilled a strong work ethic and sense of individualism in her children and grandchildren. An avid gardener, she was a founding member and president of the Camilla Garden Club and a member of the Lantana Garden Club. She grew a lush array of vegetables in her garden at Sisterdale.

A talented seamstress as well, she designed and smocked creations for her children and grandchildren. Didi was president of the Military - Civilian Club, a member of the Battle of Flowers Association, Los Alegradores Dancing Club, Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, the Argyle, and the San Antonio Country Club. She had many wonderful friends with whom she shared her hobbies, but her family remained her greatest passion.

Bill and Didi's favorite place was their ranch at Sisterdale, The Iron Spur, the site of many family celebrations and gatherings. Didi and Bill had been married for 64 years at the time of his death in November of 2006.

She is survived by her daughters: Anna Peavy and her husband, Robert; Stephanie Cage and her husband, Presnall; Paula Johnson and her husband, Clyde; her grandchildren: Clyde John Bennett Johnson IV and his wife, Kimberly; Mary Stephanie Peavy; Presnall Grady Cage and his wife, Caroline; Rainey Johnson Janke and her husband, Kirby; Margaret Anna Peavy; Valerie Cage Ziegler and her husband, William; William Rainey Cage; her great grand children: Richard Presnall Cage; Campbell Starr Cage; Clyde John Bennett Johnson V; Shelton Knight Johnson; and Hallie Rainey Ziegler; her cousin, Alix Meuser Harrington and her daughter, Celia Harrington Westbury; nieces and nephews, John and Anne Rainey, Nancy Rainey Crowley, Mary and Clinch Belser, and Robert and Lou Rainey.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to her caregivers: Virginia Mejia, Tania Herrera, Christina Garza, Sandy Mann, Amparo Niera, Valerie Wentworth, Julia Sepeda, and her longtime employees, Griselda and Ricardo Hernandez.

Interment took place at Sisterdale Cemetery, Sisterdale, Texas.
