In San Francisco, CA he was involved in the wholesale grocery trade as Ferris, Crowell and McCullom. He was also keeper of the U. S. Temperance House on Kearney Street.
"Justice of the Peace, 1853 in Contra Costa County; justice of the peace in Oakland, CA in 1857; mayor of Oakland, Calif., 1865-66; banker; broker. In 1867 he set up the first local private bank (the First National Gold Bank of Oakland), which became the First National Bank in 1800. He was also the president of the "Savings & Loan Society".
While traveling under the pseudonym 'H. A. Johnson', aboard the steamer Amador on the Sacramento River, he committed suicide by taking poison, tying his feet together, and then jumping or falling overboard to drown in the river.
One of his contemporaries suggested that his death was the result of his "...temporary insanity caused by financial embarrassment." His estate indicated that he had debts of $15,534.04; his assets at the time of death were $1,825.00.
