Claude served as Chairman of the Flagler CO School Board in 1941 and lost the election the following term. In Oct 1942 the family was living in Jacksonville and he was working in a ship yard.
He was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Merchant Marines, 29 Aug 1944 and served until 1945. In August of 1945 he purchased a service station on U.S. Highway 1 in Bunnell. It was previously operated by Mr. W. E. Nail. He then worked as a millwright during the construction of the Lehi Cement Plant in Flagler CO and later was a millwright at other locations in Florida.
