Mr. F. F. Wooten Dies At Age Of 86 Years
Confederate Veteran Passes Away at Home of Daughter in Concord Township—Funeral Sunday Morning From South River Baptist
Mr. F. F. Wooten, aged 86 years, veteran of the War Between the States, passed away Saturday at 2 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T. G. Watt, in Concord Township. Mr. Wooten had been visiting at the home of Mrs. Watt when he became seriously ill three days earlier.
Funeral services, in charge of the pastor, Rev. I. P. Frazier, of Statesville, assisted by other ministers were conducted from South River Baptist church Sunday morning at 11 o'clock and interment was in the cemetery there.
Festus- Franklin Wooten was born in Surry County, but removed with his parents to Iredell in early childhood and spent his life in this county, having resided in the South River community where he died, for 60 years.
Mr. Wooten was among the first volunteers who offered their services in the cause of the Confederacy at the beginning of the Civil War and served through the four years of that bloody fratricidal struggle as a member of Company H, 4th North Carolina Regiment. He was wounded at the battle of Chancellorsville and was made a prisoner three times during the war.
When South River Baptist church was organized in the early 80's, Mr. Wooten was one of the charter members, and served as deacon of the church continuously since that time. He was superintendent of the Sunday school for 35 years, having resigned a few years ago on account of the increasing weight of years. Being intensely interested in his church activities, Mr. Wooten devoted the best part of his life to the varied phases of the religious life of his community.
Mr. Wooten was a farmer and until three years ago was in active charge of his farming interests. He retained his physical and mental powers in a remarkable degree, for one of his years, up to the time of his last illness.
Mr. Wooten's wife died in 1915.
Three years ago he sold his farm and since that time had resided with his children.
One son survives, Mr. W. C. Wooten, of the South River community, and the following daughters: Mrs. S. Grose and Mrs. T. G. Watts, of Concord Township; Mrs. E. A. Massey, of Turnersburg Township; Mrs. L. C. Moore, of Marion, N. C.; and one step-daughter, Mrs. W. N. Crouch, of Saratoga, Texas. One brother, Mr. L. Q, Wooten, of Union Grove Township, also survives.
