Dirk Michels Adams, the son of Michel Adams and Anke (Dirks) Adams, was born February 10, 1817 in Jübberde, Leer, Lower Saxony, Germany. At the time that Dirk was born in 1817 this region was known as Ostfriesland or East Frisia and was part of the Kingdom of Hanover and George III of England was King of Hanover. King George III was mentally incapacitated during this time and power was exercised by his son George, Prince of Wales (the future George IV) according to the British Regency and King while his son Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge officiated as Viceroy in Hanover.

The Kingdom of Hanover was annexed by Prussia in 1866, when it became the Province of Hanover at the end of the Austro-Prussian War (also known as the Seven Week's War [fought June 14 – August 23, 1866]). This war resulted in Prussian dominance over the German states.

Today the region of Ostfriesland is part of the German State of Lower Saxony. Ostfriesland consists of the three districts of Aurich, Leer, Wittmund plus the city of Emden in the State of Lower Saxony.
