12th Pennsylvania Governor, US Senator. A lumber merchant, he served in the Pennsylvania State Legislature from 1841 to 1847, and served as Speaker twice. Elected as the 12th Governor of Pennsylvania, he served in that office from 1852 to 1855. He was elected as a Democratic Senator from Pennsylvania to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the failure of the State Legislature to elect a candidate in early 1855, and served from 1856 to 1861. He unsuccessfully ran for re-election, losing to Senator Edgar Cowan, who held the seat throughout the Civil War. He remained active in Pennsylvania politics before passing away in Clearfield, Pennsylvania in 1880.
