Randolph was born in Big Cottonwood (now known as Holladay), Utah. In the fall of 1879 the Bartlett family moved to the Ashley Valley (now known as the Uintah Basin) area of Utah. They were three weeks making the trip from the Salt Lake Valley to the Ashley Valley. They arrived on October 15, 1879. While on their way out to the Ashley Valley their baby and youngest daughter became ill so they stopped a few days while they doctored them that they might get better. Randolph, the baby, never fully recovered. He died December 3, 1879
