S/SGT Shafer was an Assistant Engineer aboard a B-24D that was part of the 66th Squadron, 44th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. The bomber, with a crew of ten, departed Benina, Libya on 16 August 1943 with Foggia North, Satellite as the intended destination. According to the Missing Air Crew Report, the aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire over the target and while in a spin was hit by enemy fighters. The aircraft was seen to go down with from three to five chutes seen to open Only the Radio Operator, T/Sgt Wesley L. Zimmerman, survived. He was taken prisoner, but escaped and returned to his unit on 04 November 1943.
