Lillian Anna Sullivan, the daughter of Karl Joe and Anna Fredricka (Borges) Schwartz, was born on Dec. 14, 1921, on the family farm north of Lodgepole. She graduated from Lodgepole High School and received her degree in nursing from Denver General Hospital. In 1953, after serving several hospitals in Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota, Lillian joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at several bases in the U.S., including Gunter Air Force Base in Alabama where she received training at the Air University School of Aviation Medicine in 1954. She was then transferred to Rhein Main Air Base in Germany from 1955 to 1957, and was selected to be the first Aero Med Evac Flight Nurse. Lillian then returned to the states, serving in the reserves at VA Hospitals in New York and Denver, retiring in 1976 as a major.

On May 27, 1973, Lillian was united in marriage to Lester Sullivan. They lived in Central City, Colo., for several years before retiring and returning to the Lodgepole area. Lillian and Lester were instrumental in the development of Sullivan Hills, a camp of the ELCA Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries on the family homestead 10 miles north of Lodgepole, where she was born. Lillian spent her last months at Miller Memorial Care Center in Chappell. Her family and friends are grateful for the devoted care she received from her nurses and aides.
