The wonderful life of Elsie Morin Rockwood, age 87, ended Monday, June 6, 2011 at a Salt Lake City care center, after valiantly enduring a long period of diminishing health caused by a stroke. Her kindness, positive attitude, and cheerful countenance will be missed by all who knew her.
Elsie was born June 28, 1923 in the small agricultural community of Hereford (in Baker County, Oregon) to Charles and Mary Morin. After graduating from high school, she left home to attend college at Brigham Young University. She was a blue eyed, 5' 2" fun loving gal, who loved to dance and had many suitors.
And the winner in Elsie's courtship derby was a BYU tennis player named Linn Rockwood. They married on January 24, 1946, while Linn was on leave from the Marine Corp. She became the mother of five children, whom she adored and bragged about to all who would listenoften to the embarrassment of her children.
Elsie was a successful business woman and entrepreneur. Elsie founded Deseret Properties Real Estate Company and originated the Quilted Bear (an arts and crafts gift store).
She served as president of the Women's Counsel of the Salt Lake Board of Realtors, was one of nine members of the board's Arbitration Committee, and was a speaker at various real estate conventions and seminars.
Elsie was a faithful member of the LDS Church who served as a Relief Society President, teacher, Cub Scout Den Mother, and in many other callings.
She also served others in quiet ways that most were never aware of. Among her many acts of kindness were sponsoring a family of Vietnam refugees and taking-in a young woman who had become pregnant and needed a place to live. She was also active in the P.T.A. and enjoyed participation in a literary club and an inter denominational bible study group.
She is preceded in death by her daughter Mary Carol and her sister Janet. She is survived by her husband Linn R. Rockwood; her children Alan (Ghislaine), Scott (Kate), Kathy (Doug Glaittli), Frank (Heidi); her son-in-law Steve Farley; twenty-seven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; her brother Arthur and sisters Ina and RitaRae.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Olympus Stake Center (2700 East 4500 South in Holladay, Utah). Viewings will be held on Friday, June 10, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary (3401 South Highland Drive (1495 East) in East Millcreek, Utah) and prior to the funeral on Saturday morning from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. in the Olympus Stake Center.
