Death of Rev. J. W. Jacobs
The Kansas City "Star" contains this notice of the death and funeral of Mayor Jacobs' father formerly a resident of Carthage: "The funeral services of the Rev. John W. Jacobs were held today at the family residence, 2521 Prospect avenue. They were conducted by the Rev. Dr. Quayle of Independence avenue M.E. [Methodist Episcopal] church. The body was taken to Forest Hill Cemetery and placed in the receiving vault, preparatory to interment in the family lot.
The deceased was born at Watertown, Jefferson county, New York in 1823. At the age of 18 he was licensed as a minister in the M.E. church, and at 33 he was presiding elder of the Niagara district. He was subsequently transferred to Chicago and placed in charge of the city missions. His health not being rugged he gave up his regular pastoral work and removed to Jasper county in 1868 and engaged extensively in farming and stock raising. A year later he was elected county superintendent of schools. He removed to Carthage, the county seat, in 1870, for the purpose of educating his children. For several years he has been a resident of this city and engaged in preaching at odd intervals as his health would permit.
Mr. Jacobs leaves a widow, Lucy Y. Jacobs, two sons and two daughters; Ernest B. Jacobs of Carthage, MO., Jay W. Jacobs and Mrs. John H. Crandall all of this city and Mrs. Edwin G. Woodling of New York City.
