A French impressionist painter, and printmaker. Albert was born in Paris, France. Both his mother and father were artists. His mother was a distinguished miniaturist. In 1866 Albert began his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts Paris. In 1874, Besnard won the important Prix de Rome. While in Rome he met Charlotte Dubray. She was a talented sculptress. Albert was a master of his trade and had a good command of painting in watercolors, pastels, and oil, as well as etching. He was commissioned to decorate numerous Parisian buildings, including the ceiling of the Comédie Française, and the dome of the Petit Palais. In 1913, Albert was appointed to be the director of Villa Medici in Rome; in 1922, he became the director of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1924, he became the first painter since 1760 to be elected as a member of the Académie Française. Albert Besnard died in Paris on 04 December 1934.
