James Hamilton Foulk (also: Fulk, Volck, Folk) was born in Indiana, the son of Thomas Fulk (son of Andreas Volck) and Penelope Jane Harrison, both born in North Carolina. His parents were married in Surry, North Carolina, March 4, 1832. After his father's death in Indiana in the mid-1840's his mother married (2) Noah A. Franklin in Owen County, Indiana, January 2, 1848, but was again a widow by 1860.* Penelope later would marry (3) her first husband's widowed brother, Henry Fulk, in Marshall County, Iowa, January 29, 1869. By 1860 James' widowed mother had moved the family to Coles County, Illinois, where James married (1) Mary Ann Ball in Douglas County, Illinois, on November 11, 1861.* Mary Ann was born about 1838 in Indiana. James had moved back to Indiana by 1864. He was a resident at Brazil in Clay County when he enlisted as a private and was mustered into Company A, 149th Indiana Infantry, on January 11, 1865. Private Foulk was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, on September 27, 1865. James returned to Indiana where Mary Ann later died giving birth to twins on July 24, 1875. Several years later James married (2) Mrs. Susan (Darby) Method in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, on December 17, 1896. In 1910 James and Susan were residents at Tuckahoe, Jasper County, Missouri, where James was working as a superintendent at a zinc mine (US Census). Sometime thereafter they returned to Indiana. About 1920 James and Susan left Indiana and moved to Santa Maria, California, where Susan died in 1923. James died at Santa Maria on November 5, 1927, was buried in the Santa Maria city cemetery on November 7, 1927 (Calif. Death Index).
