US Senator. Born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, he moved to New Mexico in 1881 and engaged in stock raising. He was a member of the Iowa Territorial Senate (1899-1900), chairman of the Iowa Territorial central committee (1905, 1911) and a member of the Iowa State constitutional convention in 1910. In 1921, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Albert B. Fall and served until 1925. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he engaged in the newspaper business at Washington, D.C. and other business interests until his death at age 86 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
