Mr. Goble returned to Japan in 1860 as the first Baptist missionary to Japan following service under Commodore Perry in his expedition there. He was the first missionary to translate a part of the Bible (the book of Matthew) into colloquial Japanese. Although challenged by the Japanese, there is strong evidence that he invented the jinrikisha (man-pulled cart) or rickshaw for transporting his invalid wife around the streets of Yokohama in 1870.
