Folk Personality. Last widow of a union civil war veteran. With her death, the only known one left is a 95 year old woman, who lives in Alabama. In 1927 at the age of 18, she married John Janeway, an 81 year old Union Civil War Veteran. She and her husband were married in the middle of a dirt road before family and friends, John at 81 was a Union Civil war veteran, she barely 18. John joined the Union Army as a 19 year old farm boy and served in the 14th Illinois Cavalry. Barely two months in uniform, he was captured near Athens in August 1864 during the Georgia campaign. He was paroled at Savannah four months later and discharged the following July at wars end. He spent decades in California before coming home to Tennessee. The courtship started when she was but 16. Her parents would not allow a marriage until she was 18.

On 31 January 1940, "Gertie" Janeway married Alfred Vineyard in Grainger County TN. In 1943 Gertrude divorced Alfred Vineyard and went back to using the name Gertrude Janeway.
