Son of Samuel Laforge and Susannah Fuller, was born May 26, 1842, at Matteawan (now Beacon), NY. On June 8, 1869, Abel was united in marriage to Margaret Swain Getchell. Their children, all born in New York, New York County, New York, were:

Adrian, b. 29 Sep 1873;
Lily Suse, b. 16 Mar 1875;
Rose Margaret, b. 16 Mar 1875; &
Leon Laforge, b. 27 Oct 1877.

Abel was a Civil War Veteran having served as a Private in the 85 NY Infantry and as a Lt. & Captain in the 106 NY Infantry Regiment. After the war he was breveted to Major. At the time of his death he was the senior partner in the Macy Dept. Store of New York City.

Abiel T. La Forge

News was received yesterday of the death of Mr. Abiel T. La Forge, the senior partner of the house of R.H. Macy & Co. Mr. La Forge was about 36 years of age, and was born in Wisconsin. He served through the war of the rebellion with credit leaving the Army with the rank of Major. For a time he was connected with the importing house of Mills & Gibb, on Broadway, which he left to become a buyer in the establishment of R.H. Macy. Three years after his first connection with the house he was admitted to partnership, and had been a partner in the firm at the time of his death for about nine years. His service in the Army impaired his health and for three Winters he spent a month or two in Florida, seeking relief for a pulmonary difficulty, which was becoming more deeply seated year by year. He left this City during the first week in January, in his usual health and no alarm was felt about him by his friends. His partner, Mr. Valentine, heard nothing of him until yesterday, when the dispatch announcing his death was received. He was a man of excellent business capacity and had a large acquaintance. He leaves a widow and five children. [Published February 12, 1878, in the New York Times.]
