Mr. Monroe Smith, who just celebrated his 77th birth-day, is "a man you don't meet every day," in other words, his life has been a very remarkable one. He has lived at his present home on the headwaters of Green River since he was nine months old, and notwithstanding the fact that he has been a "going" man all his life, has never been out of "Old Kaintuck." He has been a remarkably healthy man and has not taken a dose of medicine of any kind for 55 years. Was a distiller for a long time but has not touched an intoxicant for 46 years and up to that time drank very little. Mr. Smith has been a constant tobacco chewer for 65 years and to tobacco he partly attributes his excellent health. He has been a member of the church for 53 years and attends church regularly now. The old gentleman is spending his declining days with his second wife and is as happy, he says, as he was on his wedding day. He is the father of 8 children, three of whom are dead. Long may Uncle Monroe Smith live and when the All Wise decides that his mission on earth is completed, may he be taken to a brighter world where sin and sorrow are unknown and where happiness reigns supreme.

The best tobacco crop in this section is that of C. R. Brawner on the Old Monroe Smith farm. There are 15 acres of the weed and it is looking splendidly.
